How this calculator works

The model idealizes your cargo bed as a beam supported at two points — the very front and the very back of the length you enter. This is a simplification: it is not the same as your vehicle's actual steer, drive, trailer-axle, kingpin, or tandem positions, which are almost never located at the exact ends of the cargo floor. Each cargo item's weight is split between those two idealized support points in proportion to how far it sits from the opposite end. Adding up every item's share gives the idealized front and rear load totals, and the weighted-average position of all the cargo gives the estimated longitudinal center of gravity as a percentage of the bed length. Treat every number here as a rough planning estimate, not a measurement of your specific truck or trailer.

Worked example

A 20 ft bed carries a single 1,000 lb pallet centered at the 10 ft mark — exactly the middle. The idealized front and rear load shares are estimated at 500 lbs each, and the estimated longitudinal center of gravity sits at 50%, inside the 45-55% range this tool treats as approximately centered. Move that same pallet to the 5 ft mark instead, and the estimated front load share jumps to 750 lbs (75%) while the estimated center of gravity drops to 25% — leaning noticeably toward the front. None of these numbers represent this vehicle's actual axle weights.

Understanding the inputs and outputs

  • Position from front is the distance from the very front of the cargo bed to the center of that item — not its edge.
  • Estimated longitudinal center of gravity is the single balance point of all your cargo combined, expressed as a percentage of the entered bed length from front to back — it is an idealized estimate, not a measured or certified value.
  • Idealized front/rear load share is how much of the total cargo weight each end of the entered bed length would carry under this simplified two-point support model — not your vehicle's real axle weight.
  • Max payload is optional, based only on the number you enter, and only enables the overweight check — it doesn't affect the distribution estimate and isn't checked against any official rating.

A 53-foot trailer's kingpin and axles are not located at the very front and back edges of the cargo floor, and a straight truck or cargo van's axle positions differ substantially from its cargo-bed endpoints too. A calculator that actually estimated real axle loads would need your vehicle's specific geometry — front support/kingpin/front-axle position, rear axle or tandem center position, empty (unloaded) axle weights, axle and gross vehicle weight ratings, and each item's full dimensions rather than a single position.
