How this calculator works
The calculator converts your trip distance to a common internal unit and your fuel efficiency to miles per gallon, so it can compute gallons (or liters) used regardless of which units you selected. It multiplies that fuel volume by your fuel price to get total cost, and doubles the distance first if you select round trip.
Worked example
A 500-mile one-way trip at 6.5 MPG uses about 77 gallons of fuel. At $4.00 per gallon, that's about $308 in fuel cost — roughly $0.62 per mile. Selecting round trip would double both the distance and the total cost to about $616.

Understanding the inputs and outputs
- Trip distance should be entered as one-way — use the round trip toggle rather than manually doubling it.
- Fuel cost per mile/km is fuel only — it doesn't include any other operating cost.
Common mistakes
- Entering round-trip distance while also toggling round trip on, doubling it twice.
- Treating fuel cost per mile as your full operating cost per mile — it doesn't include truck payment, insurance, maintenance, or other costs.
- Mixing MPG and L/100km fields without switching the unit toggle first.
Limitations
This calculator uses one flat fuel-efficiency figure for the whole trip — real-world fuel burn varies with load weight, terrain, idling, and weather, none of which this calculator accounts for.

- How does this handle miles vs. kilometers?
- Unlike some of our other calculators where distance unit is just a label, this one performs a real conversion — trip distance is converted to miles internally so it can be combined correctly with your fuel efficiency (MPG or L/100km) regardless of which units you select.
- What does the round trip option do?
- Enter your one-way trip distance and toggle Round trip to double it automatically — useful when you're calculating fuel for a there-and-back trip without having to do the math yourself.
- Does this include anything besides fuel?

- Where does the MPG/L-per-100km conversion come from?
- We use the standard conversion mpg = 235.214583 / (L/100km), based on US gallons and miles, so results stay consistent whether you enter your fuel efficiency in MPG or L/100km.
