How this calculator works

Total revenue is your route base rate plus stops completed multiplied by your rate per stop. The calculator estimates fuel cost from your fuel price and fuel efficiency, adds non-fuel operating cost (van payment or lease, insurance, maintenance, tires) for the miles driven, and adds any tolls or parking. What's left after every cost is estimated profit — shown both in total and per stop completed.

Worked example

A route pays a $150 base rate plus $2.00 per stop, with 80 stops completed over 120 miles — $310 total revenue. At $3.50/gallon and 18 MPG, fuel costs about $23. At $0.35/mile operating cost, non-fuel cost is $42. Total cost is about $65, leaving an estimated profit of about $245 — roughly $3.06 per stop. Break- even is only about 5 stops at this rate, well under the 80 actually completed.

Understanding the inputs and outputs

• Route base rate is the flat pay for the day or route, independent of how many stops you complete.
• Profit per stop shows what each completed stop is actually worth after every cost — useful for comparing routes or contracts of different lengths.
• Break-even stops is the floor — completing fewer than this on a route means losing money, everything above it is where profit starts.

Common mistakes

• Judging a route by total pay alone without checking profit per stop or per mile against a lower-stop-count route.
• Using a semi-truck operating cost assumption for a cargo van — vans cost meaningfully less per mile to run.
• Forgetting tolls and parking on routes that run through dense urban areas.

Limitations

This calculator is built around the route-plus-per-stop pay model — it doesn't fit a single brokered freight load with one lump-sum revenue figure (use the Load Profit Calculator for that).
